The Unlook Moment

Twenty seconds, somewhere else.

This page opens the way a Moment does: quietly, with room to breathe. The Unlook Moment is a full-display pause that helps you look away, reset, and return — without ever feeling punished or locked out.

Where it begins

An invitation you can answer honestly

No alarm, no badge, no urgency. The invitation appears top-centre on the display you are working on, states what it is offering, and waits — up to ten minutes. Ignore it, and it leaves quietly; the record simply says the opportunity passed.

  • It never steals focus. The invitation appears above your work but your keyboard stays exactly where it was.
  • The countdown is availability. The quiet “09:59” in the corner says how long the offer stands — not a deadline you have failed to meet.
  • One opportunity, everywhere. Start it from the invitation, the menu bar, or Today — the first answer wins, and nothing ever doubles.
  • Walking away counts. Step out for a stretch and Unlook records a natural pause instead — the break happened; nobody needs to be told.

Invitation to Moment

The Bead becomes the Moment

There is no window that opens, no dialog that appears. The same small mass you were just looking at grows, travels, and floods past the edges of the display — one continuous object, from the first frame to the last.

  1. E1

    The invitation

A small panel settles at the top of your screen, on the display you are actually using. It carries the Bead, the Moment type, and three answers — Start, Snooze, Skip. It never takes your keyboard.

  2. E2

    The seam

Press Start, and the Bead is painted in place — the same size, the same position, the same silhouette. The invitation is only released after its successor has appeared. There is never a blank frame.

  3. E3

    The swell

For the first half-second the Bead simply grows where it stands, still an object you could hold. Leaving now costs you nothing: nothing has been recorded yet.

  4. E4

    The flood

Then it accelerates past the edges of the display, and the environment appears from inside it — not laid over your work, but opened out of the Bead itself.

  5. E5

    The settle

Just under two seconds after Start, the field is complete: a prompt, a quiet progress line, and three controls. The timer was running the whole way — presentation never touches it.

With reduced motion on, the entry does not exist: the invitation and the settled Moment simply cross-fade, and nothing travels. The Moment is a complete equivalent experience — not the animated one with pieces removed.

Live it instead

A Moment, in miniature

Everything above, running for real: the seam, the swell, the flood, a genuine twenty seconds, pause, Compact, and the return to work. Nothing is recorded, and you can leave whenever you like — exactly like the product.

A real 20-second Eye Reset, exactly as the desktop app choreographs it. Space for pause is the app's shortcut; here, every control is a button.

While it runs

Calm, in every state

The prompt changes once, softly, near the end. Progress is a quiet line, never a number shouting down at you. And pausing holds everything — the timer, the field, the drift — until you are ready.

About twelve seconds in, the prompt changes once — a 160 ms cross-fade, no movement. Missing it entirely costs you nothing.
Paused: the drift stops and the field holds. “Take your time.” A Moment stays paused indefinitely — Unlook never resumes it behind your back.
Completed — only when the configured duration is actually reached. Today and History update immediately.
Ended early: recorded as partial, with identical visual weight. Whether you ended it or something else did, the treatment is the same — neutral, never shaming.

Every display, one Moment

Painted once, across everything

The environment is drawn in one coordinate space spanning every connected display; each screen shows its own region of it. The display you were working on carries the prompt and controls — the others simply take part.

The owner display: prompt, progress, controls.
A secondary display: the same field, one line, no duplicate controls, no second timer.

Plug a display in mid-Moment and it joins with a quiet cross-fade. Unplug one and the rest recompose. Nothing replays, nothing restarts, and there is only ever one logical Moment — one timer, one outcome.

When you need the screen

Make it small, keep the Moment

On a call, sharing your screen, mid-demo? Compact moves the same Moment into a corner controller — same timer, same outcome, your work uncovered. Escape leaves the controller; it never ends the Moment.

Compact mode is in development — it is next in the build.

Moment types

One environment, three tempos

Every Moment type opens into the same Suspension field — the longer the Moment, the quieter it becomes. Eye Reset is the flagship; Movement Break and Long Break are designed and clearly conditional.

Movement Break · 5 minutes“Stand up and walk away.” The field softens and the drift slows to twenty-two seconds. Ending early is worded “I am back early” — you are returning, not failing.○ Conditional — designed, not committed
Long Break · 15 minutes“Step away properly.” Suspension at its quietest: two arcs, a forty-second, near-still drift.○ Conditional — designed, not committed

If something interrupts

Both are honest records of what happened

Screens lock. Laptops sleep. Apps crash. When Unlook can tell how much of a Moment you actually took, it offers the choice: finish the last few seconds, or leave it as a partial. When it cannot tell, it records a partial and says so — “there is nothing to make up.”

Unlook never invents time it did not observe, never marks a Moment complete because a process disappeared, and never resumes one silently. A pause you chose and a pause the world chose for you are treated with the same respect.

And when it ends — completed, partial, or interrupted — every overlay fades, your windows are revealed exactly where they were, and focus returns to your work. Never to Unlook.
